Plot:

Peter Frye, typical American boy, is orphaned when his parents are caught in the London Blitz. He is not told of their fate, but shuttled from one selfish relative to the next, ending with "Gramp," a kindly ex-vaudevillean. Peter and Gramp, both fond of "Irish bulls," get along fine; but the morning after Peter finally learns he's an orphan, his hair spontaneously turns green! The absurd over-reactions of stupid people overturn his life as the story becomes a parable.

Un ragazzino dai capelli di un sorprendente colore verde, raccolto dalla polizia mentre sta vagabondando senza meta, racconta al dottor Evans una strana avventura.

Peter - questo è il nome del bambino - è fuggito da casa quando ha saputo dal nonno di essere un orfano di guerra. Alla notizia ha fatto subito seguito l'incredibile cambiamento di colore dei capelli: Peter lo considera un marchio vergognoso e tangibile della propria diversità e per sfuggire alla derisione dei compagni di scuola e al sospetto, da parte degli adulti, di una misteriosa e contagiosa infezione, si è allontanato da casa deciso a nascondersi al mondo intero. Ma il sogno di una folla di orfanelli materializzatisi da un manifesto affisso a scuola, lo spinge, adesso, a pensare di essere investito di una specie di missione di pace. La lettera del defunto padre (un medico caduto durante un bombardamento su Londra) che il nonno, infine, gli consegna, lo rafforzerà a credere che il colore verde dei suoi capelli è un monito rivolto a lui stesso e agli altri a combattere contro ogni conformismo.
