Richard Kelly aveva stupito al suo esordio con un film affascinante e inafferrabile come Donnie Darko. Poi si era un po’ perso con un’opera ambiziosa e in parte irrisolta, Southland Tales. Dopo il flop commerciale di Southland Tales, The Box sembra essere un run for cover, una ricerca di qualcosa di familiare e affine, ma nello stesso tempo accattivante per il pubblico, basato su un’idea forte e di sicura presa. Lo spunto viene da un fulminante racconto di Richard Matheson, maestro dell’horror e dell’insolito, capace di creare incubi apocalittici come Io sono leggenda e sottili parabole paranoiche in innumerevoli racconti che talvolta hanno dato origine a indimenticabili episodi della serie televisiva Ai confini della realtà.
Per noi italiani, l’idea di partenza è familiare per la commedia musicale "Un mandarino per Teo" (diventata anche un film di Mario Mattoli del 1960), ma ha origini ancora più antiche, tra rimandi letterari vari. Resta il fatto che lo spunto è brillante e si presta a più di qualche osservazione sul rapporto che lega la natura umana al desiderio di ricchezza.
Arlington Steward è misteriosamente resuscitato in ospedale dopo essere stato colpito da un fulmine e, costruito un apparecchio dallo scopo ignoto, se n’è andato. Virginia, 1976. Prima dell’alba il campanello di casa Lewis suona svegliando i coniugi Norma e Arthur. Aperta la porta, Norma trova un pacchetto. Si sveglia anche il figlioletto Walter, incuriosito. Nel pacchetto c’è una strana scatola e un biglietto: il signor Steward chiamerà alle cinque del pomeriggio. Arthur lavora a un progetto della Nasa - il Viking è atterrato su Marte - ed è totalmente preso dal lavoro. Norma, insegnante, è alle prese con altri problemi ed è sola in casa quando arriva puntuale il signor Steward, con il volto in parte sfigurato dal suo incontro ravvicinato con il fulmine. Spiega a Norma che se preme il pulsante che sovrasta la scatola provocherà la morte di uno sconosciuto e guadagnerà un milione di dollari. Se invece rinuncerà a premerlo, riceverà cento dollari per il disturbo. Ventiquattro ore per decidere. Norma ha un problema a un piede causato da quello che oggi si definirebbe un caso di malasanità, mentre Arthur viene rifiutato come astronauta. Entrambi hanno quindi motivi per avercela con la sorte. Davanti a loro una decisione assurda che però prendono sempre più sul serio, tentati dal denaro e dalla voglia di scoprire la verità. Dopo tanto parlare, Norma preme il pulsante quasi d’impulso. Ma questo è solo l’inizio.

Richard Kelly was amazed at his debut with a fascinating and elusive as the film Donnie Darko. Then it was a bit 'lost to an ambitious and partly unresolved, Southland Tales. After the commercial flop of Southland Tales, The Box seems to be a run for cover, a search for something familiar and similar, but at the same time appealing to the public, based on an idea of strong and secure grip. The idea comes from a story by Richard Matheson lightning, master of horror and the unusual, creating apocalyptic nightmares as I Am Legend and subtle paranoid parables in countless stories that at times have resulted in memorable episodes of The Twilight reality. For Italians, the idea is familiar to the musical comedy 'A Mandarin Teo' (now also a film by Mario Mattioli, 1960), but even more ancient origins, including several literary references. The fact remains that the idea is brilliant and lends itself to more than a few comments on the relationship between human nature to desire for wealth.
Arlington Steward is mysteriously resurrected in hospital after being struck by lightning, and built a machine from an unknown purpose, is gone. Virginia, 1976. Before dawn the doorbell rings waking up the husband and wife Norma Lewis and Arthur. Open the door, is a standard package. Walter son also wakes up, intrigued. In the package there is a strange box and a note: Mr. Steward will call at five in the afternoon. Arthur works in a project of NASA - the Viking landed on Mars - and is totally engrossed in his work. Norma, a teacher, is facing other problems and is alone in the house when it arrives on time, Mr Steward, his face disfigured in part from his close encounter with lightning. Norma explains that if you press the button above the box will cause the death of an unknown and will earn one million dollars. If, however, be deflected from the press will receive a hundred dollars for the trouble. Twenty-four hours to decide. Norma has a problem in the foot caused by what today we would call a case of malpractice, while Arthur is rejected as an astronaut. Both have therefore no reason to be angry with the lot. Before them, however absurd that a decision taken increasingly seriously tempted by money and desire to discover the truth. After much talk, Norma press the button almost on impulse. But this is only the beginning.
