Liesel (Sophie Nélisse) is een jong meisje dat tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog met haar pleegouders in München woont.
Ze is getuige geweest van de geallieerde bombardementen op de stad en de deportatie van Joden naar het concentratiekamp Dachau.
Temidden van de chaos van de oorlog begint het 9-jarige meisje boeken te stelen om ze stiekem te lezen in de kelder.
Daar bevindt zich ook een schuilplaats voor ondergedoken Joden.
