Trama :
Il film è ambientato a Chicago, nel 1980.
"Joliet" Jake Blues ( John Belushi ) , dopo aver ricevuto i suoi averi dall'agente carcerario ( Frank Oz ) , esce dalla prigione ( la Joliet Prison ) e viene affidato in custodia a suo fratello Elwood ( Dan Aykroyd ) . È in regime di semilibertà dopo aver scontato una pena per rapina. Lo stesso Jake spiegherà poi il motivo di quel gesto : pagare una cena non saldata dai compagni della Blues Brothers Band, di cui fa parte anche Elwood. Nonostante la libertà appena riconquistata, Jake si arrabbia quando scopre che il fratello è passato a prenderlo con una Dodge Monaco del 1974, prima usata dalla polizia locale. Elwood spiega di aver scambiato la loro vecchia Cady, una Cadillac, con un microfono, e di aver comprato la Dodge a un'asta della polizia a Mount Prospect, nell'Illinois. Per dimostrargli che funziona perfettamente, compie un incredibile salto da un ponte mobile mentre questo è semiaperto. Jake si ricrede e la Dodge diventa la nuova Bluesmobile.
