Plot Summary for 'The Bear'
French title: "L'ours" (1988) This is probably the french cut. see note under substitles below.
The director of _Quest for Fire_ creates yet another film in nature with almost no human dialogue in this picturesque story of an orphaned bear cub who is adopted by an adult male bear and must avoid hunters. Bart the Bear stars in this anthropomorphic fantasy.
My opinion: if you have the patience, it's a touching story about a bears life: losing his mother, avoiding the hunters, and eventually being adopted by another bear. (or is it his father?)
I found the 'animal' sounds at times seemed to be dubbed by a human voice, trying to express the animal emotion..
This makes it extra easy for children to follow the emotional storyline, but irritated me at times.
Nonetheless I did cry seeing this Movie in the cinema when it came out! (and i'm a 'man')
The movie is special also because of the great story told, while using wild animals! (like a leopard!)
I once saw 'the making of' feature and it was amazing, difficult shooting, and made for a natural result.
Remember this is the time BEFORE 'special digital effects'!
I remembered this movie now that i saw 'The fox and the child (2007)' a similar movie mainly shot in the wild.
Video: I recoded this 1280x544 HD version from the CiNEFiLE version. that version is coded to a fixed filesize (4GB) and is 'overweight'. So I trimmed it down using 50% Quality setting in mediacoder (1 pixel blur, more or less) to 1GB for easy download.
the Audio remains 6 channel, but is coded down 1/8th from the original 1.02GB (23% of orininal file) 1510Kbps uncompressed DTS to AAC, quality setting 35 with Neroencoder. 253Kbps avarage i find enough for the mostly snorting sounds of bears trotting around and the wind in the mountains!
The subtitles... ah I almost forgot. just spent about 3 hours retiming the subtitle verse by verse! (Jubler)
This as I only found one srt that wasn't a translation of the original french, but actually what the english audio says, and the srt was appearantly made for another (the english?) cut of the movie, so in a few places the subs were off by a few seconds, and there was no way to automatic retime them.
Enjoy! ;D
