Summary
The original, non-musical film version of the book which inspired "Fiddler on the Roof".

Directed by and starring Maurice Schwartz, this Yiddish language film released in 1939 depicts a world lost to Nazi barbarism. Inspired by the tales of Tevye der Milkhiker by author Sholem Aleichem, Tevya depicts the struggles of a learned Jewish farmer grappling with antisemitism in late nineteenth century Boyberik. Far more nuanced than Fiddler on the Roof, and featuring a Tevye far closer to the source material than Topol's, this insightful and heartbreaking story is a must-see.

I bought this DVD at great personal expense - it is only unavailable from The National Center for Jewish Film at Brandeis University - and ripped it to the best of my ability so others could enjoy it too.
The film was shot entirely in Yiddish for the North American market, and as such the hardcoded subs are part of the original film. To my knowledge no print of the film exists - or has ever existed - without the English subtitles.
