Synopsis
The original, non-musical film version of the book which inspired "Fiddler on the Roof".

Directed by and starring Maurice Schwartz, this Yiddish language film released in 1939 depicts a world lost to Nazi barbarism. Inspired by the tales of Tevye der Milkhiker by author Sholem Aleichem, Tevya depicts the struggles of a learned Jewish farmer grappling with antisemitism in late nineteenth century Boyberik. Far more nuanced than Fiddler on the Roof, and featuring a Tevye far closer to the source material than Topol's, this insightful and heartbreaking story is a must-see.

I bought this DVD at great expense - it is unavailable anywhere commercially - and ripped it so others could enjoy it too. The film was shot entirely in Yiddish, and I hardcoded the subs as this was my preference at the time. If there is enough demand, I would be happy to rip the DVD again with a separate subtitles file. I would also gladly take advice concerning improving quality and reducing file size.
