Description
Teenage Fanclub - Album Discography Pt.II (1993 - 1997)
Thirteen (1993) Creation Records/Geffen Records 1. Hang On 2. The Cabbage 3. Radio 4. Norman 3 5. Song to the Cynic 6. 120 Mins 7. Escher 8. Commercial Alternative 9. Fear of Flying 10. Tears Are Cool 11. Ret Liv Dead 12. Get Funky 13. Gene Clark Japan bonus tracks 14. Genius Envy 15. Don's Gone Columbia 16. Chords of Fame (Phil Ochs) 17. Weird Horses 18. Golden Glades 19. Older Guys (Gram Parsons) Norman Blake - Vocals, guitar Gerard Love - Vocals, bass Raymond McGinley - Vocals, guitar Brendan O'Hare - Drums The follow-up to the critically acclaimed and commercially successful Bandwagonesque, Thirteen has suffered by comparison, with the band declaring it wasn't an easy album to make. However, it's a more than worthy successor and trimmed to 10 tracks would have been even better. The opening quartet (three of which were singles) are prime Fanclub, with 120 mins and Escher not far behind. the 'second side' is less immediate, with Raymond McGinley's Tears Are Cool a subtle highlight. The Japan edition added six more tracks, all b-sides in the UK. Notably Brendan O'Hare has two tracks here, his last contribution for the band. The album title supposedly derives from the Big Star song of the same name, although the thirteen tracks and it being the Third Teenage Fanclub album (if you disregard The King) may have all factored. EAC secure rip with log/cue from original Japan Geffen CD. Artwork included. UK bonus disc 1. Goody Goody Gumdrops 2. Radio (version) 3. It's So Hard To Fall In Love 4. Gene Clarke (version) No info on this UK bonus disc but it appears to be an uncredited radio session, probably for the BBC. Covers 1 and 3 are originally by The 1910 Fruitgum Company and Sebadoh respectively. Grand Prix (1995) Creation Records/Geffen Records 1. About You 2. Sparky's Dream 3. Mellow Doubt 4. Don't Look Back 5. Verisimilitude 6. Neil Jung 7. Tears 8. Discolite 9. Say No 10. Going Places 11. I'll Make It Clear 12. I Gotta Know 13. Hardcore/Ballad Generally regarded as the band's finest hour, Grand Prix boasts all three songwriters at the top of their game. If you're not convinced by Sparky's Dream, Don't Look Back, Neil Jung, Discolite, I'll Make It Clear or Mellow Doubt, then Teenage Fanclub is not the band for you. Every song here is a gem and most continue to make regular appearances in the live set. Hilariously Q magazine rated Grand Prix #72 in its Top 100 Greatest British Albums Ever poll. There are barely 71 British albums worth owning, let alone better ones that this. EAC secure rip with log/cue from original UK Creation CD. Artwork included. UK bonus 7" EP. 1. Discolite (demo) 2. Voicemail from Rodney Bingenheimer 3. I Gotta Know (demo) 4. Coffee Morning (instrumental) 5. Norman's Answerphone Message 6. Untitled instrumental One of the rarest items in the TFC catalogue, this 7" was only available with the intial vinyl pressing of the album. Gerry Love's Discolite demo is amusingly shambolic, Raymond McGinley's I Gotta Know demo far more polished. My vinyl rip cleaned with click repair. Australian Tour Edition Bonus CD 1. About You (acoustic) 2. Between Us (Innes) 3. For You 4. Try And Stop Me (Pickett/Phillips) 5. Who Loves The Sun (Reed) Made up of tracks from UK b-sides of the period, this five-track disc was available with the Australian tour edition of Grand Prix. Norman Blake - Vocals, guitar Gerard Love - Vocals, bass Raymond McGinley - Vocals, guitar Paul Quinn - Drums David Bianco - Occasional guitar, piano, vocals (producer) EAC secure rip with log/cue from original Australian CD. Disc art included. Songs From Northern Britain (1997) Creation Records 1. Start Again 2. Ain't That Enough 3. Can't Feel My Soul 4. I Don't Want Control of You 5. Planets 6. It's a Bad World 7. Take the Long Way Round 8. Winter 9. I Don't Care 10. Mount Everest 11. Your Love Is the Place Where I Come From 12. Speed of Light Probably the most underrated album in the entire TFC discography, Songs from Northern Britain contains a handful of their absolutely finest songs. In Ain't That Enough, Gerard Love created the quintessential Fanclub song and Norman Blake's Start Again and Planets run it close. For those three alone, Rolling Stone's 2 star review is absurd, but there's plenty more here to make this another classic. Norman Blake - Vocals, guitar Gerard Love - Vocals, bass Raymond McGinley - Vocals, guitar Paul Quinn - Drums George Borowski - Backing vocals, guitar David Bianco - Piano EAC secure rip with log/cue from original UK Creation CD. Artwork included. Part III tomorrow... Howdy! (2000), Four Thousand Seven Hundred and Sixty-Six Seconds - A Short Cut To Teenage Fanclub (compilation, 2002), Man-Made (2005) and the 2002 collaboration with Jad Fair, Words Of Wisdom And Hope.
