Description

Companion pieces:

*1 – Stan Getz & Bill Evans, Stan Getz/Bill Evans: 1964
Recorded in 1964, first released in 1973. The original US version of the album (Verve V6-8833) has the title "Previously Unreleased Recordings", "A Discovery in 1973" was used for the Japanese release. This CD-release contains 5 bonus tracks.
Stan Getz and Bill Evans initially worked on the "Stan Getz/Bill Evans" album in 1964, that, much like the Getz collaboration with Gary Burton entitled "Nobody Else But Me", was done on the heels of the saxophonist's commercial success in the bossa nova arena.
Both efforts were scrapped and laid on the shelf to gather dust.
Pettinger's bio says both Bill and Stan Getz were disappointed with the results, and held release off for many years.
Although this particular session has generally received lukewarm reviews from critics in comparison to the other Getz/Evans recording available - "But Beautiful" - it was a solid set of playing by Getz and Evans, with Elvin Jones on drums and either Richard Davis or Ron Carter on bass.
They clearly have fun in powerhouse performances of "My Heart Stood Still," "Night and Day" and "Funkallero."
Despite it all, highly recommended.

*2 - The Bill Evans Trio with Stan Getz, But Beautiful: 1974
Recorded in 1974 for radio broadcast, released in 1996 after the deaths of both artists.
Bill Evans died in 1980, Stan Getz in 1991.
In 1974 Evans and Getz performed live concerts in Europe, the source material for these dates, recorded for Radio One in Antwerp, Belgium, and NOS in Laren, The Netherlands.
Getz meshes almost perfectly with Evans' trio, with bassist Eddie Gomez and drummer Marty Morell, with only one sore spot:
Getz ignored the pianist's request not to play the under-rehearsed "Stan's Blues," which provoked Evans into quickly dropping out and signaling his sidemen to avoid solos of their own.
But the remaining tracks are all invigorating, particularly Evans' brisk "Funkallero" and the lush take of Jimmy Rowles' ballad "The Peacocks."
BUT BEAUTIFUL's blend of Evans's introspective piano and Getz's velvety tenor saxophone results in a romantic, exuberant take on the material.
