In 2199, vijf jaar na de Gamilons hun invasie van de aarde begonnen,
is de planeet verwoest door de bommen van deze buitenaardse wezens.
De overlevende mensen zijn ondergronds gegaan om aan het bestraalde aardoppervlak te ontsnappen.
Op een dag ontdekt voormalig piloot Susumu Kodai een capsule,
gestuurd van de planeet Iscandar,
dat vertelt over een apparaat dat de straling van de aarde kan verwijderen.
De 'Earth Defense Force' bouwt het slagschip Yamato
met een nieuw type aandrijving om de reis van 148.000 lichtjaren naar Iscandar te maken
in de hoop de aarde te redden. Als men faalt,
zal binnen een jaar de straling de rest van de mensheid doen uitsterven...

In 2199, five years after the start of the Gamilas attack on Earth,
the planet has been ravaged by the aliens'
radiation bombs and the remnants of humanity have fled underground.
One day, former pilot Susumu Kodai discovers a capsule
sent from the planet Iskandar that tells of a device
that can remove the radiation from the Earth's surface.
The United Nations of Space Administration rebuilds the battleship Yamato,
with a new type of propulsion system - the wave motion engine.
This enables it to make the long trip to Iskandar and back in hopes of saving the Earth.
Within 73 days the radiation will drive the rest of humanity to extinction.

Seit nun schon vielen Jahren wütet ein alles zerstörender
Krieg zwischen der Menschheit und den außerirdischen Gamilon,
der bereits schwere Verluste forderte. Die Erdatmosphäre
ist aufgrund unzähliger Meteor-Bombardements radioaktiv verseucht,
weswegen die wenigen Überlebenden auf unbestimmte Zeit in unterirdischen Bunker-Städten ausharren müssen.
Doch als die Menschen erfahren, dass ihre Erzfeinde über die nötige Technologie verfügen,
um die Erde wieder bewohnbar zu machen, kommt neue Hoffnung auf.
Mit dem letzten übrig gebliebenen Kampfschiff Yamato begibt sich eine Gruppe tapferer Männer
auf den gefährlichen Weg nach Iscandar.
