The King is dead: long live the King. In 1509, Henry VII was succeeded by his son Henry VIII, second monarch of the house of Tudor. But this is not the familiar Tudor world of Protestantism and playwrights. Decades before the Reformation, ancient traditions persist: boy bishops, pilgrimage, Corpus Christi pageants, the jewel-decked shrine at Canterbury.

So Great a Prince offers a fascinating glimpse of a country and people that at first appear alien - in calendar and clothing, in counting the hours by bell toll - but which on closer examination are recognisably and understandably human. Lauren Johnson tells the story of 1509 not just from the perspective of king and court, but of merchant and ploughman; apprentice and laundress; husbandman and foreign worker. She looks at these early Tudor lives through the rhythms of the ritual year, juxtaposing political events in Westminster and the palaces of southeast England with the liturgical and agricultural events that
punctuated the year for the ordinary people of England.

Reach for the stars
By Sabrina Dragoni-Long on 24 April 2016
So Great a Prince, by the historian Lauren Johnson, is an excellent snapshot of England in 1509, the year of the accession of a young Henry VIII to the throne. The told story is not only concentrated on the King and his courtiers, but also on common people's daily life. An intriguing and inspiring book, the second effort of this young and incredibly skilled, knowledgeable and highly witted historian. I highly recommend it.

A fascinating look at Tudor England
By AC on 24 April 2016
I found this a fascinating book. Although not a historian myself, I am very interested in history and enjoy reading historical fact and fiction. This book was interesting to me as, rather than going over the usual facts of the marriages of Henry The Eighth, it concentrated on the social history of England at his accession. It talks about life in general in 1509; education, clothing, sexuality, money, marriage customs, food and feasting amongst a wealth of other interesting and, to me, largely unknown facts. I learnt a lot about the way of life of ordinary people as well as the well off and Ms Johnson takes particular care to explore the lot of women in that era. I liked the way the book followed the religious year, starting and finishing with Lady Day, showing the rhythms of life for the English at that time.
The book is authoritative and the notes and bibliography show the depth and breadth of research undertaken. The index is also wide ranging and helpful to the reader. So Great a Prince is very well written, immensely readable and I just love a book where I learn lots of new things. Highly recommended.
