Sibelius - Sym No 2 - John Barbirolli, Cologne RSO (1969) [Philidor; FLAC]

John Barbirolli took to Sibelius' symphonies early, and they remained a feature of his performances over the years. I have a 1940 Columbia recording in two separate reissues, but the transfer on both (and they're different) is too primitive to put up here, in my opinion. This 1969 live performance has a somewhat disjunctive first movement, but then catches fire for the next three and never lets go. It is passionate, lean-toned, dark, and powerful. The sound is quite good, and the finale goes out in a blaze of glory.
