Five of Shostakovich's Preludes and Fugues, as performed by the composer. Nos. 1, 4, 5 and 23 were recorded in 1958. No. 24 was recorded in 1952. They are not technically the best on the market--Shostakovich was already suffering from an ailment that would ultimately be diagnosed as differently as arthritis and polio--and it did affect his agility to an extent. But he was still a powerful pianist with a steely touch and great evenness.
