Zach (Trevor Wright) is an aspiring artist living in San Pedro, California, who has put off his dreams of going to art school in order to work and help his older sister Jeanne (Tina Holmes), his disabled father, and his five-year-old nephew Cody (Jackson Wurth). Working as a short-order cook to make ends meet, Zach escapes during his free time to paint, draw murals, surf, and hang out with his best friend Gabe (Ross Thomas), as well as with his on-again, off-again girlfriend Tori (Katie Walder).
When Gabe’s older brother Shaun (Brad Rowe) comes back home from Los Angeles for a few weeks, Zach and Shaun develop a close friendship as they go surfing together. Shaun, who is a published writer, encourages Zach to take control of his life and pursue his ambition of going to CalArts, a large university of the arts. One night after surfing Zach and Shaun share a kiss, however Zach is not prepared to give in to his feelings immediately. Nevertheless, their friendship soon develops into a romance, while at the same time Shaun builds a strong bond with Cody.
When Jeanne learns that Zach has been spending time with Shaun, she warns Zach that Shaun is gay and to keep Cody away from him. Though his sister is reluctant to accept that Zach himself might be gay, both Gabe and Tori are supportive. Zach and Shaun's relationship is then strained by his sense of obligation to support his family versus his relationship with Shaun and his desire to pursue his own dreams. Zach is confused as to what he really wants.
Shaun secretly submits Zach's art school application, and Zach is eventually accepted on full scholarship. When Jeanne's boyfriend Alan (Matt Bushell) gets a job in Portland, requiring her to move and leave Cody behind with Zach, Zach is forced to decide between putting others first and neglecting his own dreams—as he has always done—and fighting for what he truly wants, both for himself and Cody. He finally discovers that affirming his love for Shaun and going forward with his art career ends up providing the best solution to his dilemma. The film ends with a scene of Zach, Shaun, and Cody playing together on the beach as a family.

Zach (Trevor Wright) es un joven artista de 22 años que vive en la ciudad de San Pedro, California, que ha abandonado sus sueños de estudiar en la escuela de artes a causa del nacimiento del hijo de su hermana Jeanne (Tina Holmes) lo que le lleva a trabajar para mantener y ser el padre adoptivo de su sobrino Cody (Jackson Wurth) que en el tiempo en que transcurre la película ya ha cumplido 5 años. Trabaja de cocinero en un restaurante de comidas rápidas y en su tiempo libre sale a patinar, pintar murales, practicar surf y salir con su mejor amigo Gabe (Ross Thomas) cuando él se encuentra en la ciudad, así como salir con su exnovia Tori (Katie Walder).
Cuando el hermano mayor de Gabe, Shaun (Brad Rowe), vuelve a casa para curar un caso de de bloqueo como escritor a causa de una relación fallida, Zach y Shaun desarrollar una estrecha amistad. Shaun alienta a Zach para tomar el control de su vida y llevar a cabo su ambición de ir a CalArts y mientras más cercana se vuelve su amistad, ésta se va convirtiendo en un romance. Por su lado Shaun, creará un fuerte vinculo con Cody.
Jeanne se entera de que Zach ha estado pasando gran parte de su tiempo libre con Shaun y le advierte que Shaun es gay y que mantenga Cody lejos de él. Aunque su hermana se muestra reacia a aceptar que Zach pueda ser gay, tanto Gabe y Tori al momento de enterarse de su relación con Shaun, lo apoyarán. Sin embargo, la relación de Zach con Shaun se termina a causa de que Zach pone primero su obligación de mantener a su familia frente a su relación con Shaun y su deseo de perseguir sus propios sueños.
Shaun secretamente envía la aplicación de Zach a CalArts, y Zach recibe una beca completa. Cuando el novio de Jeanne, Alan (Matt Bushell) consigue un trabajo en Portland se mudará con Jeanne dejando a Cody con Zach. Zach se ve obligado a decidir entre poner primero a los demás y dejar de lado sus propios sueños —como lo ha hecho siempre— y luchar por sus propios ideales y metas. Finalmente decide mudarse al apartamento de Shaun con Cody para estudiar en CalArts y seguir adelante con su carrera artística al mismo tiempo que él y Shaun cuidan y crían a Cody.
