Shebalin - Str Qt No 7 in Ab, op 41 - Krasni Qt (2000) [Philidor; FLAC]

It's a terrible picture, but Vissarion Shebalin was a fine composer, an excellent teacher, and a person of strong ethical beliefs. He took the floor at meetings of the Stalinist music union to protest against arbitrary condemnations of composers who refused to toe the Party line--and inevitably, he came in for condemnation himself, in the late 1940s. He fought back; and he fought back against repeated debilitating strokes late in life, to finish his Fifth Symphony. Shostakovich only kept the pictures of two other musicians on his desk, and one of those was Shebalin. His Seventh Quartet, composed soon after the blistering assault on his character and musicianship of the Zhdanov putsch, demonstrates just how little he changed under official pressure.
