Trama

Il professore di astrofisica John Koestler non crede nel destino ma le sue convinzioni vengono scosse quando il figlio entra in possesso di un documento scritto 50 anni prima da una bambina della sua stessa scuola. Sul foglio sono indicati solo numeri uno dopo l'altro, numeri che l'occhio allenato dello scienziato comincia a decifrare per caso scoprendo che indicano giorno e numero di vittime dei principali disastri dell'ultimo mezzo secolo e di alcuni che devono ancora verificarsi.
Ancora fantascienza per Alex Proyas, regista di culto (o forse è più corretto dire "di nicchia") emerso facendo un cinema decisamente underground per gli standard di Hollywood (Il corvo e Dark city) e poi legittimato dal blockbuster dal sapore asimoviano Io, robot, abile come pochi a deviare dal classico meccanismo narrativo statunitense per poi rientrarci un momento prima che le forbici del produttore si sostituiscano alle sue in sala di montaggio. Eppure nonostante l'esperienza Proyas realizza l'ennesimo buon film incompleto.
Mischiando horror e fantascienza, con stile rispettivamente nipponico e americano, e cercando di spiazzare in ogni momento lo spettatore grazie ad una storia dai risvolti piacevolmente imprevedibili, Segnali da futuro, come spesso capita ai film di Proyas, nella prima parte fa grandi promesse che però non vengono mantenute nella seconda. Una cura inusuale per l'atmosfera attraverso piccoli dettagli metereologici che contrappuntano la narrazione, un passo molto svelto e un uso espressivo delle luci cupe anche nelle giornate più assolate di Simon Duggan, sembrano preludere ad una soluzione interessante dei molti temi introdotti. Infatti accanto ai più classici spunti sulla seconda occasione e la mancanza di una figura paterna forte il regista introduce una più complessa dialettica tra predestinazione e caos, scienza e fede. Tutte idee che circolano con piacere nell'industria culturale americana degli ultimi anni.
Purtroppo però dopo alcune sequenze di rara maestria che cercano di incastrare i personaggi in un ecosistema vitale che vive e soffre con loro (il mondo visto dall'alto che somiglia ad un organismo pulsante in cui le autostrade sono le vene e le macchine i globuli rossi o il crollo di un aereo in mezzo all'autostrada), le idee sembrano terminare bruscamente e il film comincia ad attingere dall'universo hollywoodiano recente: La guerra dei mondi, Deep impact, Incontri ravvicinati del terzo tipo, il remake di Ultimatum alla Terra, un finale simile a The fountain e molto altro.
Tutto l'interesse accumulato si perde in poco e il ridicolo sembra essere dietro ogni angolo. Nicolas Cage non ha la caratura per reggere da solo un personaggio, figuriamoci un film intero e allo spettatore non resta che attendere i titoli di coda perchè la serie di delusioni abbia termine.

Plot

In 1959 a young Lucinda Embry stands in her school's playground staring at the sun, hearing whispers. The school makes a time capsule to be opened fifty years later. Lucinda writes a page full of seemingly random numbers. Lucinda is later found in a closet, her hands bloody from scratching the numbers into the door.
In 2009, Jonathan Koestler (Cage), a widower and professor of astrophysics at MIT, discusses life on other planets with his son Caleb. This leads to a discussion of where the boy's dead mother is. Caleb wears a hearing aid and knows sign language because he often hears confusing noises.
Caleb attends the same school that Lucinda attended; when the time capsule is opened Caleb receives her page of numbers. He sees a mysterious stranger in the nearby trees and hears voices whispering. Jonathan finds the numbers, notices the sequence 911012996 and realizes it is a reference to the date and number of deaths from the September 11, 2001 attacks (9/11/01/2996). Jonathan finds similar information based on other numbers on Kevin's sheet. The last three dates on the page are in the immediate future. There are numbers between each of the dates that he cannot reconcile.
Jonathan learns about Lucinda scratching at the door of the school closet, and that she recently died from a drug overdose. John's sister encourages him to reconcile with their father. Caleb receives more visits from mysterious strangers who give him a small smooth stone, and is shown images of the world on fire.
On his way to pick up Caleb from school, Jonathan witnesses a plane crash. It is the date that the numbers predicted for the next disaster; John realizes that the unexplained numbers are the locations of the events.
Jonathan finds Lucinda's daughter, Diana, and granddaughter Abby, but scares them away when he reveals his interest in Lucinda. Jonathan pinpoints the next disaster to Worth Street in lower Manhattan. With news of terror-threats, Jonathan suspects the next cataclysm will be a terror attack. He spots a suspicious man in a subway station and chases him onto a stopped train. Cornered at the front of the train, the man is found to only be carrying shoplifted video games. At that same moment an approaching train derails, smashing into the station and destroying much of Jonathan's train.
Diana tells Jonathan that the next date is the day her mother told her she would die, October 19. Diana's mother heard voices whispering horrible things and moved to the woods to "get ready". The two search Lucinda's old remote mobile home. Diana thinks the last number is not "33" but "EE" written backwards. They find pictures of the disasters she predicted and a copy of Matthäus Merian's engraving of Ezekiel's "chariot vision". Finding a pile of small smooth stones near Lucinda's bed, John flips it over to find the underside covered with the words, "Everyone Else", representing a cataclysm that no one will escape. While John and Diana are inside the Strangers appear around the car carrying the children. John drives them away only to hear from Abby that the "whisper people" wanted her and Caleb to go with them. John chases one of the strangers into the woods and confronts him in a clearing. The stranger opens his mouth, releasing a terrible roar and stream of light before he disappears.
Abby has colored in the picture of the "Likeness of a Man" in the engraving and says it is the sun. John has a sudden revelation and rushes them to the MIT observatory, where he discovers that a massive solar flare will soon reach Earth; the final disaster.
Diana wants to hide in some caves she knows of. John agrees, but knows that will not save them. John calls his father, telling him to seek shelter. His father thanks him but refuses. John returns to Lucinda's school and uncovers the numbers on the old door. He thinks they may be coordinates of a safe place. Before John finds the numbers, Diana takes the children and heads for the caves. John discovers that Lucinda's last coordinates are the location of her mobile home. When Diana stops for gas Caleb calls his father from a payphone. The solar flare is announced on the news and panic erupts. John argues with Diana, trying to convince her that the caves will not help. As they argue the Strangers drive off with Caleb and Abby. Diana pursues them until she is broadsided by a truck.
John arrives just as Diana dies, finding the small stone in Diana's hand. He continues to Lucinda's mobile home, finding the children and the Strangers in a dry river bed covered with small smooth stones. Abby says the "whisper people" told her her mother was safe now. Caleb says "they have been protecting us all along" and "they sent a message ahead to prepare the way". A vessel similar to the wheels in the engraving descends from the sky. The Strangers refuse John entry because "only the chosen must go". For some unaccountable reason, the Strangers allow Caleb and Abby to take a rabbit on board with them, but none of their loved ones. John convinces Caleb to go by promising that the whole family will be together again some day. The Strangers dissolve into translucent figures surrounded by wing-like wisps of light.
Caleb signs to his father, "You and me together forever". The vessel departs with the children, accompanied by similar vessels. John collapses in grief, waking the next morning to find the sky full of smoke and heat. Cities are already burning.
John makes it to Boston, finding the streets full of rioters. He arrives at his father's home to spend his last moments with his sister and parents. John's father calmly tells him that, "This isn't the end, son." John replies, "I know." The family embraces as the solar flare incinerates the surface of the Earth.
Caleb and Abby wear white linen clothing and stand in an otherworldly field as vessels take off in the distance. They walk across a field of golden grass, running to a large tree.

Note

Grande souspance per questo film interpretato magistralmente da Nicholas Cage, il quale, ci porta la vecchio quesito, è meritevole o raccomandato? Personalmente cerco di non cadere in questi tranelli che, altro non fanno, che depistarci dal film e dall'interpretazione (che sia buona o pessima) mettendoci su un altro avviso, tra l'altro inutile e meschino.
Il mio personalissimo parere è che qui, Cage, ha dato prova di essere veramente un attore e non un raccomandato, si approccia con il suo stile, per alcuni versi unico direi, affrontando una trama che ci lascia, spesso e volentieri, spiazzati, non dando niente per scontato.
Ho guardato questo film diverse volte, fino a che non ho avuto la fortuna di averne una versione a 1080p, formato che mi ha permesso di riscoprire il film e apprezzarlo ancor piu di prima. E' risaputo che l'alta definizione può dare una nuova vita al film, ma, può anche farlo colare a picco perchè, come ci mostra al meglio i dettagli, ci mostra anche gli errori e, spesso, ci fa rivalutare film che credevamo pessimi e, d'altro canto, ci fa vedere pessimi film che credevamo belli.
In questo caso il film guadagna, la traccia video è molto buona e l'audio è in Ac3, entrambe le lingue. Per chi mastica l'inglese, consiglio di guardarlo anche in lingua originale, io non capisco molto la lingua, anzi, molto poco, ma, conoscendo la trama avendolo visto piu volte, assommato alle mie scarse conoscienze, si può arrivare a comprendere quasi tutto e apprezzare a pieno gli attori che, stessa cosa per il video, in lingua originale si scoprono per quello che sono realmente, cavalli purosangue o brocchi.
Auguro a tutti una buona visione e, spero, che rivalutiate il film positivamebnte pechè, sempre per il mio modestissimo parere, è un prodotto di buona qualità che vale bene il tempo di visione.
Mi raccomando di restare in seed e di non arrivare, come troppo spesso succede, a 20 completi e 3 seed, uno dei quali sono io. Se rimango bloccato a seddare un film non posso andare avanti, ieri avrei presentato un altro lavoro se avessi avuto banda libera, invece, ho dovuto fare da Baby sitter ai vampiri. Pensateci se realmente ne vale la pena, in fondo io ho gia i film, quindi posso prendermela con comodo e aspettare quanto voglio.
