This book was prompted by my efforts, desultory and otherwise, to understand how progress

in brain science bears on issues of human knowledge. The results of my thoughts on these

issues are couched in more lenient and heterogeneous terms than those of philosophers

dedicated to traditional epistemology. I consider this difference to be a useful starting

point for further explorations of how we know.
