Description

Artur Schnabel never bothered to keep his technique up to its finest early level, but his performances more than made up for it with musical insight, drive, and expressiveness. Here he's paired with the Pro Arte Quartet at the height of their considerable fame and skill: a Belgian ensemble of great color, lean tone, and an energy equal to Schnabel's. Many performances of this Piano Quintet end up mired in reverence, but there's an exuberance here that carries all before it. It's definitely not great sound, but it was good in 1934, and what was laid down on the metal masters back then still has power to thrill today if you can listen past the old sound.

A bio of the Pro Arte Quartet, two bios of Schnabel, and a bio of Schumann are enclosed.

Thank you again for all your effort! Classical is a disappearing genre in our culture and education, at least in America. This is something that needs to be kept alive, and these rarities are something that need to be shared and heard! You help keep the music alive!
