Schmelzer - Sonate & Balleti - Freiburger BarockConsort (2012) [Philidor; FLAC]

In the musically conservative, Italians-can-do-no-wrong court of the 17th century Austrian Hapsburgs, composer Johann Schmelzer was the first non-Italian to achieve prestigious position. In fact, he rose to the highest position possible for a musician at the court, Kapellmeister, and eventually sought, then achieved, ennoblement. He was well-liked by the Emperors he served, to whom he offered hundreds of ballets and sonatas, all in the older Florentine and Ferrarese styles. This disc offers an energetic and well-played selection of music to suggest how Schmelzer ingratiated himself with those rulers.
