Saygun - V Con, Suite - Mirjam Tschopp, v, Ari Rasilainen, Rheinland-Pfalz City Phil (2003) [Philidor; FLAC] (Size: 151.95 MB)
Description“Saygun’s gift of orchestration, and particularly in creating dark, velvety, voluptuous textures from such instruments as low winds, harps, and celesta, means that no matter how complex the music may be, it always falls gratefully on the ear…. If you collect characterful and rewarding contemporary music, you will want this.” – classicstoday.com in a review of a recent recording of Saygun’s Symphony No. 4, Violin Concerto, and Suite Opus 14. Saygun's Violin Concerto was premiered in 1967. It is very much a work of his late period, veering between stormy dissonance and a kind of free-floating, rhapsodic lyricism. As always with Saygun, development is of less importance than transformation. The slow movement is among his most expressive, owing something perhaps to Berg, while his finale recalls Stravinsky in his Neo-Classical period. OVer it all, of course, looms his own style, as Saygun remains inimitable. By contrast, the Suite of 1934 has a strong folkloric character. It is among his most approachable and memorable eary works.
