Godot's absence, as well as many other aspects of the play, have led to many different interpretations since the play's premiere. Voted the most significant English language play of the 20th century, Waiting for Godot is Beckett?s translation of his own original French version, En attendant Godot, and is subtitled (in English only), "a tragicomedy in two acts". The original French text was written between 9th October 1948 and 29th January 1949 after Molloy and Malone Meurt but before L?Innommable." Waiting for Godot was originally produced in Paris on January 5, 1953. The American premiere was held at Coconut Grove, Florida, on January 3, 1956 [featuring Burt Lahr and Tom Ewell]; the New York production opened at the Golden Theatre on April 19, 1956. From the liner notes by producer Goddard Lieberson: About the sounds on this record: it seemed to me that in recording 'Waiting for Godot', another dimension was called for to sustain moods or atmosphere which had been created on the stage through visual means, either by the actors or through scenery. Conventional music, I felt, would be as out of place as a painting by Rosa Bonheur in the midst of a showing of non-objective art. Therefore I have use invented sounds of a more or less abstract nature created by myself with electronic assistance of our valued engineer, Mr. Fred Piaut. This is an audio rip from the four-disc vinyl set issued by Caedmon Records [production date 1973] of the original Broadway cast of the American Production.
