If you wanted to put together a collection of sizzling Latin dance music, and had to restrict yourself to the catalog of one label, you could do a lot worse than diving headfirst into the archives of Fania Records. That's what Salsa Dance Hits is all about: two CDs of salsa that never let up. Some of the artists are world-renowned -- Ray Barretto, Willie Colón, Joe Cuba, Tito Puente, Eddie Palmieri, Machito, Mongo Santamaria -- and the others, not quite so famous. But that's what helps make this set so inviting: that it's not only the usual stuff by the usual suspects from the usual places. The compilers had the run of the vaults and chose judiciously, looking out more for non-stop groove than name power. Orlando Watussi, for example, is a Venezuelan who cut only one solo album for Fania. His track, "Ustedes Mi Rumba y Yo," is a burner, stocked with the trademark unison hart blasts and layers of percussion that typified Fania salsa. And Andy Harlow, from Colombia, not a country generally known for its salsa, provides one of the strongest tracks on the second disc with his "La Cumbiamba."
