The Rogue Prince, or, a King’s Brother:
A novella by George R. R. Martin, published in the 2014 anthology Rogues.[1][2] It is set in the Westeros of Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series, hundreds of years before the events of A Game of Thrones (1996) during the reign of King Viserys I Targaryen. The Rogue Prince serves as a prequel to Martin's 2013 novella The Princess and the Queen and focuses on the role played by the king’s brother, Prince Daemon Targaryen. Spanning the entire reign of Viserys I — from his grandfather Jaehaerys I Targaryen's death to his own — The Rogue Prince chronicles the evolving relationship between Viserys and Daemon as the king's plan for succession cements a rivalry within the family that plays out in The Princess and the Queen.

The work is presented as the writing of the fictional Archmaester Gyldayn, also the "author" of Martin's The Princess and the Queen.

With his father Baelon already dead, 26-year-old Viserys is crowned king upon Jaehaerys' death. Married to Aemma of House Arryn, Viserys names their daughter Rhaenyra as his successor, though established laws of primogeniture would make his brother Daemon next in line. After Aemma's death, the King marries Alicent Hightower. They soon produce a male heir, Aegon; but Viserys never rescinds his choice of Rhaenyra to succeed him. The king and queen subsequently have a daughter and two more sons. Establishing her own household at the Targaryen ancestral seat of Dragonstone, Rhaenyra is wed to her Targaryen cousin Laenor Velaryon and has three sons; but because Laenor is homosexual and Rhaenyra's boys do not appear traditionally Targaryen, rumors persist that they are illegitimate. Animosity between Rhaenyra and Alicent also puts their children at odds with one another. Daemon, after Laenor's death, marries Rhaenyra in secret. They have two sons — another Aegon and Viserys — and a daughter Visenya. The subsequent death of King Viserys sets the stage for The Princess and the Queen.

The Princess and the Queen, or, the Blacks and the Greens:
A novella by George R. R. Martin, published in the 2013 anthology Dangerous Women.[1][2] Set in the Westeros of Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series, 200 years before the events of A Game of Thrones (1996), it chronicles the "continent-burning warfare" (called the "Dance of Dragons") that explodes between Targaryen Princess Rhaenyra and her stepmother Queen Alicent.[3][4][5]

The work is presented as the writing of the fictional Archmaester Gyldayn, also the "author" of Martin's 2014 novella The Rogue Prince, a direct prequel to The Princess and the Queen.

When King Viserys I Targaryen dies, his widow Queen Alicent has their eldest son Prince Aegon crowned king before Viserys' daughter Rhaenyra, the only surviving child of his first marriage, can claim the Iron Throne herself. Though Rhaenyra is the king's oldest child and had been named his successor years before, Alicent and her supporters declare Rhaenyra unfit to rule and argue that, as a woman, Rhaenyra should be placed after Alicent's own male children in the line of succession. After Rhaenyra declares herself Queen at the Targaryen ancestral seat of Dragonstone, her middle son Lucerys Velaryon and King Aegon's younger brother Aemond take their dragons to seek the support of Lord Borros Baratheon of Storm's End, where Lucerys and his dragon are killed. Rhaenyra's husband Prince Daemon has Aegon's young son and heir Jaehaerys murdered in revenge. Soon both branches of the Targaryen royal line are at war, with dragons on both sides.
