Ropartz - Sym No 2 - S Lang-Lessing, O Sym et Lyique de Nancy (2006) [Philidor; FLAC] (Size: 141.65 MB)
DescriptionGuy-Joseph Ropartz was a Franck pupil: a composer and administrator, who during the tumultuous years before World War I made friends on all political sides in France, and after it became director of the Strausbourg Conservatory. He refused to be drawn into the various nationalistic debates that raged throughout France and preferred teaching and raising his family. He was by his own admission a Celtic Breton, and much of his programmatic music centered around that, but he also composed a great many non-programmatic works, including five symphonies. His Second aroused the annoyance of one of his great good friends, Paul Dukas, who felt Ropartz had simplified or dumbed-down the complexity of his craft to suit the tastes of a younger generation of composers. In fact, Ropartz had merely begun a process of general simplification of his Franckian heritage, the better to express his own personal tastes. Franck's still there throughout the Symphony, most obviously so in the driving rhythmic theme that serves as an ostinato-like cantus firmus in the finale. The performance is only moderate, but the work is attractive, and deserves to be heard. Transfers are made at 256 kBits/s, directly from the disc. Bio enclosed.
