Sprague de Camp had an instant classic in 1951 with this novel about an alien race whose culture and biology had been organized along ant or bee lines in their distant past. The arrival of a spaceship from Earth throws a giant-sized monkey wrench into the static society. The open discussion of sex and sexuality in the novel, by both humans and aliens, astonished science-fiction readers in 1951. After the 60's and the Sexual Revolution, later reviewers panned the book because the humans acted very much like people in 1951, with an "of course" attitude towards exclusive monogramy, traditional male and female roles, a largely male crew on the starship Paris, etc. In my opinion, both views of the novel are too extreme. Rogue Queen is neither an taboo-shattering blockbuster nor a timid 50's sitcom set in space. It should be read and enjoyed for what it is: an adventure on another planet in L. Sprague de Camp's Viagens Interplanetarias universe, intelligently written by one of the masters of science fiction. Or to put it another way: Rogue Queen is neither "The Left Hand of Darkness" nor "Time Enough for Love". But in 1951, how could it be? Enjoy it for its own sake. Sharing Widget |
