Description

From the VHS Box: "A gentle lamb seeks his true identity in this enthralling and beautifully animated fantasy for all ages. The innocent world of Chirin, a fluffy lamb who wears a golden bell to signal his presence, is shattered when his flock is attacked by the Wolf King. When his mother is killed defending him, he is left alone. Determined to avenge her death, Chirin sets out in pursuit of the Great Wolf. In his quest, the lamb decides that King\'s strength and ferocity may be preferable to his own gentleness. Chirin convinces the Wolf King to teach him the ways of a hunter and develops a close attachment to him. After growing into a fierce fighting ram, Chirin faces a terrible choice - attack his former herd or defend it against his mentor."rnrnWikipedia: "Ringing Bell" starts off as a children\'s film but quickly merges into a darkly toned story of the laws of nature and revenge. It has also been viewed in the past as a cautionary tale about venturing away from home, nonconformity, and the futility of seeking revenge.rnrnThe movie has Yukio Abe\'s beautiful artistic style, and for those familiar with "Unico," the main character is voiced by the same female voice actor during Chirin\'s younger years. The quality and style of this film is signature to Sanrio\'s earlier productions. Also like "Unico", this film is a musical, where background songs set the theme instead of characters actually singing.rnrnA fantastic rare example of children\'s anime with extreme, grim intensityrnIMDB review 25 January 2002 9/10 Author: Eddie (Loki1983) from Portland, ORrnrnWatching this several times as a child was quite the experience 15 years ago, and now that I\'ve found it again it still has a film experience like few others. If risky, it\'s a great display of morals and life lessons recommended for family viewing with young kids. While it still holds up as an adult, I was fortunate to have learned from it many times over years ago. Trying to find it today is hard enough . . . but believe me it is well worth it no matter what the age. Anime fans especially will find this a great entry to Masami Hata\'s filmography. With impressive art work and unique designs, "Chirin No Suzu" represents a worthwhile experience. While some of the lyrical songs are not so hot when recorded in English, the musical score is nevertheless captivating. But even the voice acting is far better than much released today. Unfortunately is went out of print in the mid-1980s from RCA Columbia Home Video, and has not received any new format release to my knowledge, at least in the US. Look hard for it and you will be quite satisfied! It\'s an artful, intense, enjoyable, and important landmark in Japanese animation.
