Rimsky-Korsakov - Scheherazade - Constantin Silvestri, Bournemouth SO (1967) [Philidor; FLAC] (Size: 236.23 MB)
DescriptionConstantin Silvestri built up the Bournemouth SO from a sturdy, disciplined, but very orthodox English orchestra into a powerhouse capable of responding to his immediate whims. He poured endless attention into re-analyzing scores, but when he got on the podium, on any night, what he did was in a sense, up for grabs. He seems to have followed the adage that when you've learned it all, throw it away and just sing. His performances sing. This Scheherazade lacks the intimacy and solo brilliance of Beecham's, but it has a momentum that carries all before it. It's especially good where most Scheherazades falter, in the fourth movement: few versions can equal the careful build of excitement, or the sustained manic pace, of this performance.
