Description
Richard Jones is a cipher these days. (You have to expect that with a last name like Jones.) It is believed he became leader of the Drury Lane Orchestra in London in 1730, and that he taught violin. All of his stage works, of which many are ascribed to him, have vanished, save for a keyboard transcription of several pieces that might be his. Jones' published harpsichord originals, on the other hand, are a mix of English popular influence and Italianate grace, with the emphasis on the former. They no doubt proved popular with the middle class that attended Drury Lane and made up the bulk of his pupils.
