Description

For english-only speaking: This book is in german. English title would be: 20th July 1944 (1951). Written by the highly decorated german military officer generalmajor Otto Ernst Remer it presents a first-hand behind-the-scenes account of the dramatic events that took place on the fateful day of 20th July, 1944 when a failed assassination attempt was made on chancellor of Germany Adolf Hitler. After promotion to major and then colonel in 1944 the author was chosen to command the elite "Grossdeutschland" guard regiment in Berlin, dedicated to protect and hold the capital city to the death if necessary. In this post, the barely 31-year-old officer played a historically pivotal role in putting down the attempt by a small circle of insurgent officers to kill Hitler and seize control of the government. On the afternoon of July 20, 1944, General Paul von Hase, the military commander in Berlin and a leader in the anti-Hitler conspiracy, announced to Remer that Hitler was dead, that civil disorder had broken out and that the army was assuming overall authority in Germany and then ordered Remer to immediately seal off key government buildings in central Berlin. Hesitating to carry out this highly unusual order, Remer decided to first contact Joseph Goebbels to confirm its validity and after telling the skeptical and uncertain Remer that Hitler was certainly not dead but only lightly wounded, the propaganda minister and Berlin Gauleiter arranged for him to speak directly with the Führer by telephone at his military headquarters in East Prussia. Before the shocked Remer could count to 3 and after Hitler hastly explained him that an attempt on his life had failed, he gave the now instantly promoted young colonel complete and total authority in Berlin to suppress the conspiracy and restore order - by force if necessary. In a historical role of major importance, which was only recognized as such years after, Remer and his elite troops moved quickly to put down the revolt, which had been poorly planned and organized but still caused severe panic and civil disorder. As panic and rumors of dead Fuhrer spread like fire it was noone else but Remer's swift and rapid actionplan which decisively put an end to the overall Coup d'etat, restored order and saved 3rd Reich from possible downfall. This amazing feat unparalleled in german history earned him the highest military decoration of Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross and he remains one of the highest decorated officers in history of german army. The story told in this amazing book has been almost completely suppressed from official history books and is together with his larger book "Verschwörung und Verrat um Hitler" (Conspiracy and Treason Around Hitler) still banned in Germany after more than 50 years. In the 2nd part he speaks of his political involvement to bring justice for german soldiers which were treated like trash by the new allied regime as he was himself imprisoned after the war. This rare and simply unique booklet should be especially interesting for anyone wanting to learn the often little known and suppressed german side of the story of the aftermath of World war 2. 30 pages. A must read for everyone.
