Nel 1958, dopo che la tenuta di Darlington Hill, dove ha servito per trent'anni e più, è stata acquistata da un ricco americano (C. Reeve), un maggiordomo (A. Tratto dal romanzo omonimo (1990) di Kazuo Ishiguro, giapponese cresciuto in Inghilterra, e adattato da Ruth Prawer Jabhala che per 30 anni gli ha scritto 2 film su 3, è il più malinconico e amaro dei film di J. Ivory. E il più politico. Ha la struttura di una cipolla, cioè a strati, da levare, gustandoli, a uno a uno fino a scoprire il cuore che qui è un nocciolo duro: una lucida requisitoria verso una classe, un mondo, un modo di vivere. In letteratura come al cinema c'è differenza tra formalismo e scrivere bene. Ivory scrive bene. E non esiste un modo di scrivere "troppo bene".
