‘PSYCHIC KILLER’ (1975) - Widescreen - Uncut.

Slightly late for the ‘mommy complex’ movies of the 60s and 70s, but predating the slew of telekinetik murder thrillers like ‘Carrie’, ‘Patrick’, ‘The Fury’, and even ‘Shawshank Redemption’ that came after, ‘Psychic Killer’ (1975) holds a special place in my heart.

Intriguingly directed, somewhat gruesome, and surprisingly sexy, this supernatural thriller brims with odd performances, bizarre plot twists, and black comic moments.

It’s also a picture that’s been largely overlooked, and even laughed off. I beg to differ, so I’m making point of upping it for your late night, viewing pleasure.

Jim Hutton (Yes, Timothy’s dad) stars as a mild mannered young man out for supernatural revenge when his beloved mother dies from an untreated brain tumor. How this happens, how he achieves said revenge, and in what gory (and sometimes absurd) fashion, is all part of the fun.

Hutton is supported by a fantastic crowd of familiar B-Movie faces including Aldo Ray, Whit Bissell, Judith Brown, Rod Cameron, John Dennis, Della Reese, Neville Brand .. the list goes on .. all wonderfully gathered for some spectacular hokum, by exploitation producers Mohammed Rustam (as Mardi Rustam) and director Ray Danton - a veteran actor, himself.

Director Danton, who’s distinguished acting career was cut short by health issues, went on to become a prolific TV director of many famous 70s and 80 crime shows such as ‘Quincy’, ‘Mike Hammer’, and ‘Cagney and Lacey’. But this is where he cut his directorial teeth - on strange and unusual, low budget, pics like ‘Psychic Killer’.

Looking at ‘Psychic Killer’ today, it’s a wonder how it could ever passed with a PG Rating back in 1975. They sure were different times. Some of it’s content might even still be considered ‘R’ Rated today. In fact, although the 1978 British cinema version was released uncut (with an ‘X’ Cert), the 1992 UK video was still pre-cut - by worried distributors - by 9 secs before re-submission to the BBFC, to remove scenes of .. well, you’ll just have to watch it and guess for yourself.

So sit back, give the critic in your head a break, and enjoy another unique and entertaining ‘six pack and a joint’ movie from the 70s.
