Project A is the first Jackie Chan-movie I ever watched. I was 5 years old when I got introduced to Jackie's style of filmmaking and I guess that Project A is the best example of it. You sure understand that this movie became one of my all time favourites and seeing it being released as a double disced Platinum Edition, made me jump up and down with joy. Can it do the movie justice?

Film

Turn-of-the-century pirate film, written and directed by Jackie Chan, who also stars as [Dragon] Mi Yong, a brave and wisecracking Coast Guard officer. Lots of stunts, kung fu fighting, food fights, toilet humour and goofy sight gags.

Project A deals with the temporary disbanding of the Coast Guard due to political dissention among various incompetent government officials. It especially concentrates on training exercises and police orientation - that is, until the coastline is threatened by deadly pirates (led by Dick Wei). Eventually, Dragon joins forces with a gambling rogue, Fei (Sammo Hung), to fight the bad guys.

This film is a fun actioner, particularly if you are a Jackie Chan fan. Many enthusiasts will insist this is Chan's best film, especially with regard to his unique directorial ability. This movie introduced a new and wildly successful blend of slam-bam action with genuinely funny scenes of broad humour.

Most Chan fans already know the story of Jackie's brush with death during Project A's filming. In one of his stunts (falling from a tower), he anticipated that his dive would be broken by a series of awnings. Unfortunately, the canopies didn't hold and he ended up smashing against the ground, head-first (watch the outtakes during the closing credits for a play-by-play). Luckily, he wasn't injured seriously and continued shooting the film after a short recuperation.

Opening Menus

Now, one thing which brought a smile to my face is the spelling mistake that can be seen before the opening menus start. Did you ever hear about the word "Platinium"? That's an "i" too much I think, isn't it? Maybe it's just my lack of English vocabulary, but I sure never heard of that way of writing "Platinum"

Picture Quality

The movie is presented in its original aspect ratio of 2.35:1. It is anamorphically enhanced. When I popped the DVD into my DVD player, I hadn't watched the UK Promotional trailer by HKL yet, and so I didn't expect too much of a quality. Given the fact that the movie was shot in 1983 and that HKLs' release of Police Story, which was shot in 1985, has a picture with much grain in it, I believed that Project A's quality would have even more grain. I was so wrong though. The picture quality of Project A is great. Of course a little bit of grain can be spotted at times, but overall it is crisp and clear and I must say cheers to Hong Kong Legends for working on that title so good.

Audio Quality

As typical of a HKL disc, the DVD features a Cantonese version and an English dubbed version. Both are remastered and in 5.1 DD. Most of the movie is being played from the center speakers only, so it is not really 5.1 Dolby Digital. However, you can hear some of the music from the rear speakers at times. Sound effects and dialogue sound crisp and clear. However, it gets a bit crackling at some places. Overall, a nice track though. I haven't listened to the English dub, so I can not comment on that. But I expect it to be like the other English dubs we know. Silly, terrible and boring. :-)

Subtitles

Subtitles are available in both English and Dutch. They can be read easily as they are free from grammatial errors or spelling mistakes. A bit of the dialogue is westernized, but overall, the movie received a good translation.

Enjoy

Peace
