Poul Ruders trained as an organist and has also studied orchestration with the composer Karl Aage Rasmussen. Since Poul Ruders began composing in the mid-sixties he has created choral works, chamber works, works for solo instruments and not least orchestral works and operas. Today he is the most frequently played living Danish composer both in Denmark and abroad.



Ruders is by nature what the Germans call an Ausdrucksmusiker. Everything he has written is marked by a decided will to expression. Stylistically, he operates with a wide-ranging expressive register. Of his earliest development one could almost say that it followed several tracks - something that can also to a certain extent be read out of his piano output. It consists of works for solo piano and two piano concertos, and spans a period from 1967 to 1994.
