SQ Rating: VG/VG-

Pink Floyd
Theater Comedie des Champs-Elysees
Paris, France
January 23rd 1970

Source: "The Man" Live In Paris (CDR)
Lineage: CDR>ACL11>WAV>CDWave>FLAC5

The objective was to improve the "TMLiP" source without heavy remastering. I speed corrected, improved the phasing, improved output consistency throughout, smoothed some transitions, and removed some pops and mic bumps. Artwork included.

The only complete versions of this show are all LO-FI sources from 1970. Though some web pages list other complete LO-FI versions, the only ones I have seen seeded in recent years are "Work In Paris" and "The Man Live In Paris". The only lineage I ever saw for the "TMLiP" release was "low gen? > CDR". Not exactly helpful. Though the underlying sources for "Work In Paris" sound as if they may be a bit better, most of it is full of heavy NR atifacts and some sort of spitting/variable hiss. IMHO, this makes "Work In Paris" very hard to listen to and thus my attempt at making the "TMLiP" source more enjoyable.

The time stretch/speed correction of 8.84% was the most significant improvement.

The phasing adjustment tightened it up a bit. Most of the time the channels were off 0.5ms-0.7ms and now they are mostly within 0.1ms.

I split the channels so they could be processed individually. Generally, the left channel's output was a bit lower, brighter, with more segments that were over-driven. Generally, the right's output was higher and darker. There were perhaps four segments from 2-8 seconds that contained continuously overdriven segments in specific frequency ranges. These segments were particularly disruptive to the level continuity so I used the parametric EQ to moderate the output of these frequencies for these small segments only. The objective was to moderate only the badly overdriven segments, not all overdriven parts. I then normalized both channels and began reviewing the whole show for level changes.

Adjusted the ouput level on more than 15 segments on each channel. A few small segments needed significant increases which required the background noise to be reduced a few db with the EQ in order for the transitions between segments to be transparent. A good example of this is the first track GITC. At about 1:06 there was SQ change in this source. The output level changed in both channels but mostly the left. The amount of output increase in the left channel required some reduction of the back ground noise a few db with the EQ. A good ear can still hear the quality change, but at least the level doesn't drop way down.

Also, whoever transferred this originally decided to get cute with track 8, Doing It. They turned the ouput up and down on the left channel to create an movement "effect". I mixed this track back towards mono to reduce this nonsense.

Removed some pops and some mic bumps, not all. Also, I thinks its worth noting that track 6 and 7 appear to be somewhat different from the other tracks. Though the sound qualities are very similar to the others with not much above 4k and the frequencies dispersed very similarly, tracks 6-7 are pure mono and have virtually no hiss as viewed on the spectrograph. Except for the difference in hiss level, they "sound" as if from the same source.

I don't know if LO-FI recordings are less receptive to Flac compression and play back, but when I play the Flac files in Winamp, it doesn't sound as solid to me as when I play the WAV files.

The result? Hey, its LO-FI, there is no miracles. It has a much better speed and the improved level consistency makes it more pleasant and easier to listen to. Overall track 3 and 6-10 probably sound the best.
