Description

Pink Floyd
"Champs Elysées"
Théâtre des Champs Elysées, Paris, France
January 23rd 1970

Sound Quality: VG
Source: Radio AM (source 2)
Generation: Reels > mic in front of R2R speakers > tape > CDR > wave > TLH > FLAC
Total time: 61:24 (+ AHM 2-sources mix 19:03)

Here is the source 2, from french AM radio. This is the RAW TRANSFERT of the tape. I only flac'd the wave files i received and translated the original french notes.

Huge thanx go to Charles, who owns the tape and shared the files with me. Charles also made a mix of several sources, "Elysées Floyd", which was put on seedfloyd.fr. "Elysées Floyd" is very interesting, with a beautiful artwork, but doesn't seem to be speed-corrected. This raw transfert is one of the sources used by FatOldSun for "The Violent Journey to Paris", which is processed and speed-corrected.

NOTES FROM CHARLES:

Pink Floyd concert at Le Theatre des Champs-Elysees (Paris) on January 22 or 23, 1970.

Historic Concert! It contains a rare public version of Main Theme from More, and one of the very first public performance of Atom Heart Mother, still under the working title of "Amazing Pudding." And the version of "Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun" presented here is one of the tougher than I know.

The sound quality is ... what it is, ie rather average, if not worse. The CD was made from a tape I made a few years ago by recording the original reel, with a microphone in front of the loudspeaker of the old reel player of my parents. I haven't found that original reel yet (it must be in my whole caboodle ...). Well, yes, this f***g reel player didn't even have any direct exit for a tape recorder connection ! So , it is not always top. And also there is some hiss with sound decreasing on the songs from "Doing It" to "Careful... (beginning)." This comes from a catastrophic handle I had done with the master tape a few months after I was given it. It happened around 1973 ... Mea culpa! I was young at the time ... But I swear it was not bad at all before it was damaged ! (you sadistic !)

I do not know precisely the original source, radio certainly and it seems that Michel Lancelot is commenting the concert (a little too much sometimes). I do not know the reasons for the cuts: I was given the reel like that ...

The tracks:

1. Daybreak (Grantchester Meadows) [6:33]
2. Work [4:12]
3. Tea Time (with musicians introduction) [1:59]
4. Doing It (Biding My Time) (beginning of the parasites) [6:18]
5. Celestial Voices (end) - Green Is The Colour [5:50]
6. Careful with that axe Eugene (beginning only) (end of the parasites) [2:22]
7. More, Main Theme (beginning missing) [4:13]
8. Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun [11:56]
9. Amazing Pudding (Atom Heart Mother) (end missing) [18:00]
10. Amazing Pudding (reconstituted from the above recording and the roio "Broadcasting from Europa 1") [19:03]

Comments:

1. DBk (GM): usual version at that time, introducing "The Man" suite, which seems to be one of the last public performance played, maybe even the last one. Too bad it is not complete !)

2. Wk: Very rare bootleg version of this amazing piece! Waters on the saw, Gilmour on the hammer, Wright on the vibraphone, Mason on... the drums. And it makes ... music! What a pity this piece was never Officially released !

3. TT: While the four musicians are having tea on stage, the radio DJ introduces them. So you learn that Waters "has a face of Christ" (!), Wright is fond of Stockhausen, Gilmour is "the nice boy of the band -there's always one-" and Mason is the drummer, thank you!

4. Di (BmT): a beautiful version of this classic Floyd, with nice flights of Wright on trombone and Gilmour on six-strings. A beautiful and controlled blues demonstration.

5. CV-GitC: A coda of "Saucerful", a little damaged by parasites, then a "Green is the colour" on which parasites only spoil the instrumental part with Gilmour's vocalizes, but not the verses sung before, phew!

6. CwtAE: the beginning of a "Careful" which wasn't going very transcendent.

7. M, MT: a very rare live version of this track, which was played very little on stage (I only know one other version, a few weeks later). It moves well.

8. StCftHotS: A rather speed version of this great classic of the Floyd at that time.

9. AP (AHM): without any doubt the highlight of this bootleg: one of the very first public performance of Atom Heart Mother. Warning: there is a bug in the recording, due to the friend who transferred the tape to CD. But is not serious: the track starts normally, then in the middle of the second movement, bang, cut! Not serious! it re-starts from the beginning, with Gilmour's spoken intro in french and the song runs through normally. It is cut before the end, during "Funky Dung", but you can easily find it complete on bootleg. Complete, really? No ! Because the available bootleg versions will certainly run until the end of the song, with the last reprise of the intro theme and all, BUT they all have a significant cut (3 minutes!) during the third movement, the one in which Gilmour and Wright improvise singing head choirs (we can hear this cut much enough). But HERE, THIS MOVEMENT (which is fabulous, incidentally) is COMPLETE! It lasts about 5 minutes 30! Anyone who knows re-working sound on his computer can easily reconstitute this AHM legend from this bootleg and others already existing. Engineers, you know what you have to do!

10. Amazing Pudding (reconstituted from the above recording and the roio "Broadcasting from Europa 1 "in which 3 minutes are missing in the 3rd movement). So this track is complete, even if you can hear the insertion of the missing segment, it remains listenable.

The 05a, 07a and 08a are reworked versions about the cuts.
