About Pete Philly

Pieter Philip Monzon (born 28 May 1980, Oranjestad, Aruba) aka Pete Philly is an Aruban-Dutch rapper/singer and producer. At the age of five he moved to The Hague, The Netherlands. There he became interested in hip hop-music by De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest and eventually started writing his own (English) lyrics. After dropping out of Art school he began building his career through entering music-competitions and making small guest-appearances with other artists that were more famous.

In 2002 Pete Philly met Perquisite, a Dutch cello-artist who also made hip hop beats. The encounter led to them forming a duo with Pete as vocalist and Perquisite as producer/composer. Together they made jazzy, soul-like rap beats with political and socially-critical lyrics. Known as 'Pete Philly & Perquisite' they made an (inter)national breakthrough in 2005 with the Mindstate EP and gained more fame with hit songs as Mystery Repeats and Time Flies. The Mindstate EP was later remixed and released as Remindstate, with every song modified by another artist including Talib Kweli and Cee Major. Winning several Dutch music awards, touring through Europe and performing at the supporting programs of inter alia Kanye West and James Brown, it was clear that they made a deep impression in (Dutch) music. In 2009 Pete Philly & Perquisite parted due to what they said were differences in opinion considering their style of music.

Both Pete Philly and Perquisite continued solo and Pete Philly's first work after the breakup was Open Loops. It was a project of 14 songs that were all downloadable for free on a specially designed site. He recorded the songs at the same time he was recording his first official solo album called One, which was released in 2011. On both the albums it was clear that he had chosen a more experimental style for his music but nevertheless, One was quite a success reaching no. 8 in the Dutch Album Top 100 and maintaining this position for four weeks.

About Open Loops

Open Loops was a 2011 music project released online by Pete Philly on YouTube and on a specially designed site. First the songs were released one per week on YouTube and at the same time the songs became available on the Open Loops-website. The songs are all free to download, which supports the view on commercialism that Philly raps about on his songs. The title stands for the thoughts and ideas that are constantly are looping in our minds before they get executed.
