Their massive success earned them a prestigious Brit Award for Outstanding Contribution To Music. They are the fantastic Pet Shop Boys – and they have put together a real treat for Mail on Sunday readers. This weekend, inside your paper, will be a brilliant FREE CD of their greatest hits – especially compiled by the Pet Shop Boys themselves, Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe. And for this exclusive CD they have even provided a special track, Did You See Me Coming?, taken from their new album – which won’t be in the shops for another three weeks. What Have I Done To Deserve This? Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe of the Pet Shop Boys were Brit 2009 Outstanding Contribution award winners Your FREE CD – Pet Shop Boys Story: 25 Years Of Hits – includes classic tracks such as West End Girls, Go West, It’s A Sin and eight other great songs spanning their chart career. In an exclusive interview to announce their Mail on Sunday CD, Tennant and Lowe revealed that, though their wild days are over, they are still exploring new musical frontiers. The anniversary of their 25th year in the business will be marked by nothing more colourful than yet more hard work as they plan summer concerts in London and Manchester. ‘The party days are over,’ admits Lowe, 49. ‘The wildest night I’ve been on recently is a trip to the opera with my mother and sister. By the time we had dinner it was pushing midnight.’ He added: ‘Before we go on stage, I normally have a lie-down. Before the Brits, Neil had a white-wine spritzer. I had a rest.’ Their musical repertoire is changing, too: the Pet Shop Boys are writing a ballet inspired by a Hans Christian Andersen story – to be performed at Sadler’s Wells theatre in London in 2011.Flamboyant: The boys have clocked up 22 Top 10 singles in 25 yearsBeing Boring? Neil and Chris say their party days are over Their favourite current bands include MGMT, Arctic Monkeys and The Killers. However, they do miss the excitement of the early years and say the digital age and shows such as The X Factor have taken away some of the thrill of music. Lowe laments: ‘Now that X Factor is guaranteed No1 every Christmas, there’s no genuine excitement, no asking what’s it going to be this year? It’s ruined Christmas. In the past you had to spend afternoons in record shops listening for what’s good. Now we’ve got internet access, you’ve lost that sense of excitement.’ Meanwhile the band’s fans have remained unswervingly loyal. ‘I’m astonished to see them still there,’ says Tennant. ‘They understood our sense of humour and they still do. ‘There was a girl who used to sit on the wall outside my house revising for her A-Levels in the mid-Eighties. There she was at a gig in London recently. She doesn’t look a bit different. ‘Another woman has written to me since 1985 when she was a little girl. Now she’s got a second child on the way.’ And the fans will be delighted that another Pet Shop Boys studio album is on the way. The album, Yes, will be released on March 23. Tennant says: ‘It’s a real privilege to get up on stage and get a reaction. That, and scoring a goal for your football team, are the two things you’ve got to appreciate in life. It’s such a good feeling. I don’t see any reason why you can’t be up there and performing at 70.’ Pet Shop Boys Story: 25 Years Of Hits will make a truly unmissable addition to your music collection – and it’s available only in The Mail on Sunday this weekend.
