Storyline: A widowed mother Tess of a young divorcee places an ad on her daughter's behalf on a lonely hearts internet website
The British-born literature professor Peter who just moved to America for a girl who dumped him on arriving responds to the ad.
Tess writes back in her daughters name for 2 months and invites him to meet her.
Her daughter Jenny is however still hung up on Rick her musician ex-husband and absent father to their son Jesse.
Jenny's childhood friend Miles "Booger" who plays surrogate father to jesse and helps her out however he can.
Peter comes to meet Jenny trowing lives into romantic chaos.
Tess finds that Peter fits her own ideal of a suitable partner adding more chaos and romance.
