Successful and well-liked, Dr. Noah Praetorius becomes the victim of a witch hunt at the hands of Professor Elwell, who disdains Praetorius's unorthodox medical views and also questions his relationship with the mysterious, ever-present Mr. Shunderson. Fuel is added to the fire when Praetorius befriends young Deborah Higgins, who has become suicidal at the prospect of having a baby by her ex boyfriend, a military reservist who was called up for service in the Korean War and killed in action.

All'università di medicina il dottor Edwell sta conducendo segretamente una indagine contro il celebre e affascinante ma poco accademico collega Noah Pretorius. Questi intanto assiste una ragazza che sviene in classe; questa dal risultato delle analisi appena fatte ha la conferma di essere incinta, se ne dispera perché non osa dirlo al padre e appena sola si spara, ma si ferisce solo leggermente. Noah la ricovera nella sua clinica e, per evitare che ripeta il gesto, le dice che c'è stato un errore nelle analisi, e decide di andare a casa di lei per preparare il padre alla notizia; ma intanto lei, tranquillizzata, torna a casa e, già evidentemente innamorata di lui, vedendolo venire crede che venga per chiederla in sposa e lo incoraggia.
