The second in Ulrich Seidl's ironically titled trilogy, after Paradise Love, explores the life of the sister glimpsed briefly in the first film, and is much more characteristic of the Austrian director's austere but deadpan style. While her sibling takes off to Africa to enjoy the company of gigolos, middle-aged Anna Maria (Maria Hofstätter) stays at home, where she devotes herself to the only man in her life: Jesus. Anna Maria is no ordinary Christian, however, belonging to an extreme Catholic sect who believe in self-flagellation and self-denial as a form of worship. Seidl takes a great deal of pleasure in these bizarre scenes, but when Anna Maria's disabled Muslim husband (Nabil Saleh) turns up, the film becomes a slightly more interesting proposition - like a very, very strange 1970s domestic sitcom. Admirers of Seidl's previous work will be better disposed to the film's static scenes, awkward silences and odd, sexually explicit flourishes, and it is probably best approached as the middle part of a trilogy of very different films than an entry point in its own right.
