"Orphans of the Sky" was originally published in Astounding Science Fiction in two parts, under the titles "Universe" (May 1941, with the cover) and "Common Sense" (October 1941, no cover). It's the first story of life about a multi-generation starship, just as H. G. Wells' "The Time Machine" is the first time-travel story. -- Sirius
