But that's a good thing! With enormous hype or expectations, a show can elicit instantaneous backlash if those initial anticipations aren't met. "Orange is the New Black" is the latest endeavor by "Weeds" creator Jenji Kohan and part of its immense appeal is that you don't know exactly what to expect from the get-go. In fact, the plot is almost a bait-and-switch. You sign on for a show about a privileged white woman being put in prison. Part comedy/part drama, this is the ultimate fish-out-of-water saga as Piper Chapman (Taylor Schilling playing a variation on co-creator Piper Kerman's real life story) adjusts to a world beyond her imagining. What the show becomes, however, is a true character ensemble about the women she encounters. Filled with fascinating characters and spot-on performances, "Orange is the New Black" is certainly one of my favorite new programs of 2013 because it serves much more in terms of story telling, emotional heft, and incisive humor than you have any reason to expect it will.
