Not exactly a lost classic, certainly not obscure -given the cast, but I am certainly grateful to Celestial and Jade Tiger for making this fine print available. Celestial bought the rights to DVD release the entire Shaw filmography and the have done a great job. Films that have been available only as awful VHS prints were digitally remastered lovingly, way beyond what I thoght possible. Being the action choreographer for over a hundred Shaw Brothers films, Tang Chia gives us his third and best film as director. Released in 1984, "Opium and the Kung Fu Master" is a film that delivers not only the action, but a good story as well and for a change, characters that we care about. But the kung fu is why we watch these movies and the team of six action directors gives us one of the the best Shaw Brothers flicks of the 80's. The widescreen picture is the best it's ever looked. The sound quality is quite good even though it is mono tracks only. A must see film. Also check out Tang Chia's other two films as director, "Shaolin Prince" and "Shaolin Intruders".
