There are several requirements before one can be chosen for this position. Traditionally it is not only a hereditary appointment, but you must also have served your people as a warrior. In modern day society this is achieved through military service. The Principal Chief chooses available candidates who are then presented before the Tribal Council of Elders for the final decision. Once this decision is made the title of War Chief is retained for life. My family has a long standing tradition of serving our country in the military. Before colonization we were Jaguar Warriors and served our people in that matter. My duties include being the head of the Jaguar Warrior Society, which is made up of tribal members who have served honorably in the military or as police officers, firefighters and EMTs. The War Chief is also responsible for making sure that our warrior society members and family members are taken care of throughout the year as well as the elders, women and children by serving as security at our tribal gatherings. Concerning matters of diplomacy the War Chief is an advisor to the Principal Chief and serves as an ambassador of the tribe in regard to government to government relations. L.A.: Where was your tribe located originally? C.J.R. : It is strange to me that when I answer the question, “What tribe are you?” that people are puzzled by my answer. Most have never heard of the Taino, yet we are the people of first contact. They know the name of the man who is reputed to have “discovered” us. Yet, unless they are history buffs or well-read in Native American subjects, they do not know us. We are the ones who “discovered” Columbus wandering lost at sea as well as the first to be called “Indian.” Sharing Widget |
