On Borrowed Time is a 1939 film about the role death plays in life, and how humanity cannot live without it. It is adapted from Paul Osborn's 1938 Broadway play, which was a smash hit. The play, based on a novel by Lawrence Edward Watkin, has been revived twice on Broadway since its original run.

Set in small-town America, the film stars Lionel Barrymore, Beulah Bondi and Cedric Hardwicke. Barrymore plays Julian Northrup, a wheelchair user (Barrymore had broken his hip twice previously and was now using a wheelchair, though he continued to act), who, with his wife Nellie, played by Bondi, are raising their orphaned grandson, Pud.

Young Pud is orphaned and left in the care of his aged grandparents. The boy and his cantankerous old grandfather become inseparable friends. But Gramps is concerned for his grandson's future and wary of a scheming relative who seeks Pud's custody. One day Mr. Brink--an agent of Death--arrives to take Gramps "to the land where the woodbine twineth." Through a bit of trickery, Gramps confines Mr. Brink, and thus Death, to the top of an old apple tree, giving Gramps extra time to resolve issues about Pud's future.

In less capable hands, this remarkable fantasy would have been either maudlin or saccharin; here, it works quite well indeed. An outstanding cast includes the marvelous Sir Cedric Hardwicke, who virtually steals every scene he's in (though the verb is by no means a pejorative). At long last, this poignant and affecting film is available on DVD (as a "DVD On-demand);" those who download this torrent will be treated to a perfectly acceptable transfer from a VHS copy. If you enjoy films such as "It's A Wonderful Life" (1939), you owe it to yourself to see this one. (Downloaded today, the elapsed time was 18 minutes.)
Wasn't able to get this to download. Very Sad.
