Het verhaal speelt net na de Tweede Wereldoorlog. De vader van Alicia Huberman is net in de Verenigde Staten veroordeeld vanwege spionage. Alicia wordt benaderd door T. R. Devlin, die voor de Amerikaanse geheime dienst werkt, om te infiltreren in een groep oud-nazi's die zich in Brazilië gevestigd hebben, om uit te zoeken wat ze van plan zijn. Samen vliegen ze naar Rio. Onderweg hoort Alicia dat haar vader zelfmoord heeft gepleegd.
Eenmaal in Rio legt Alicia tijdens het paardrijden contact met Alex Sebastian, een oude vriend van haar vader. Alicia doet haar werk zo goed dat Alex haar ten huwelijk vraagt. Ze gaat op zijn verzoek in om zo nog dichter bij hem te kunnen komen en trekt bij hem in. ondanks dat haar aanstaande schoonmoeder (die ook bij Alex inwoont) haar niet vertrouwt.
Tijdens het verlovingsfeest ontdekken Alicia en Devlin dat Alex in zijn kelder uraniumpoeder bewaart. Alex komt erachter dat Alicia hem door heeft. Hij moet haar nu het zwijgen op zien te leggen, maar moet tegelijkertijd zijn blunder verborgen zien te houden voor zijn mede-nazi’s. Hij besluit haar spelletje mee te spelen, maar haar langzaam te vergiftigen. Devlin ontdekt dit net op tijd, redt Alicia, en vlucht met haar weg. Alex blijft achter en zal spoedig zijn opdrachtgevers onder ogen moeten komen met het nieuws dat hij gefaald heeft.

Because her father was a German spy who has committed suicide in prison, Government agent T.R. Devlin recruits Alicia Huberman to become an undercover agent. She has fallen in love with Devlin and is trying to repay her father's moral debt to America, the country she loves and feels her father has betrayed. Her assignment in Rio de Janeiro involves resuming an acquaintance with a wealthy German businessman, Alexander Sebastian, who has been attracted to her. She is to infiltrate his circle of German scientists. Against the wishes of his mother, Sebastian asks Alicia to marry him. She accepts, and they marry, though she is disappointed when Devlin raises no objections. After their marriage, Alicia explores the Sebastian mansion, but finds the wine cellar is locked. Devlin tells Alicia to invite him to a party at Sebastian's mansion. She is to take the key to the wine cellar from Sebastian's key ring without his knowing it. At the party, Devlin and Alicia investigate the wine cellar, where the find some bottles of sand. When Sebasian finds them together in the wine cellar, they convince him they are having a tryst. Noticing that the key was missing and then returned, Sebastian suspects Alicia of being a U.S. spy and his mother plots to eliminate her because she has become a woman who knows too much.
