"Powderfinger"
2002 Live I mixed the audio down using Dolbly ProLogic II 384kbs on Track 1 I also mixed the Audio Down using 7.1 Channel 1563 kbs on Track 2 During the song right click in Audio and select the Audio Track you prefer. :) I had to increase the size of this video considerably due to the quality of the original and I literally spent 2 months getting the video to decent watchability and audio to where it sounded durn great, with 2 separate tracks. Please be patient on the dnld. @?@ ENJOY! One of my very favorite songs! '-' ~ Little Known Fact: Young recorded a solo acoustic version of "Powderfinger" at Indigo Studios in Malibu, California in September 1975, and intended for his unreleased mid-70s album Chrome Dreams. He later sent the tape to his friend Ronnie Van Zant of Lynyrd Skynyrd who were to use the song on their next album. However, Van Zant died in a plane crash in October 1977, (the same plane and pilots that Aerosmith deemed unsafe and too drunk pilots) and Lynyrd Skynyrd never recorded the song. The song was officially released as an electric version with the band Crazy Horse for Young's 1979 album Rust Never Sleeps. "Powderfinger" is the first song of the second, electric, side of Rust Never Sleeps. Following the mellower acoustic side 1, Allmusic critic Jason Ankeny describes the song as "a sudden, almost blindsiding metamorphosis, which is entirely the point -- it's the shot you never saw coming." The lyrics are narrated posthumously by a young man. The young man attempting to protect his family by himself against a threatening gunboat or police boat. Despite his youth he believes it is his responsibility to protect his family against the threat. He finds himself paralyzed with indecision, eventually taking action, and is ultimately killed. He describes his death with the gruesome line "my face splashed against the sky." Author Johnny Rogan describes the last verse as the character's "moving epitaph": ``Just think of me as one you never figured Would fade away so young With so much left undone Remember me to my love; I know I'll miss her`` "Powderfinger" LYRICS: Look out, Mama, there's a white boat comin' up the river With a big red beacon, and a flag, and a man on the rail I think you'd better call John, 'Cause it don't look like they're here to deliver the mail And it's less than a mile away I hope they didn't come to stay It's got numbers on the side and a gun And it's makin' big waves. Daddy's gone, my brother's out hunting in the mountains Big John's been drinking since the river took Emmy-Lou So the powers that be left me here to do the thinkin' And I just turned twenty-two I was wonderin' what to do And the closer they got, The more those feelings grew. Daddy's rifle in my hand felt reassurin' He told me, Red means run, son, numbers add up to nothin' But when the first shot hit the docks I saw it comin' Raised my rifle to my eye Never stopped to wonder why. Then I saw black, And my face splashed in the sky. Shelter me from the powder and the finger Cover me with the thought that pulled the trigger Think of me as one you'd never figured Would fade away so young With so much left undone Remember me to my love, I know I'll miss her.
