Are you a power-user with 5 minutes to spare? Do you want a faster internet experience?

Try out namebench. It hunts down the fastest DNS servers available for your computer to use. namebench runs a fair and thorough benchmark using your web browser history, tcpdump output, or standardized datasets in order to provide an individualized recommendation. namebench is completely free and does not modify your system in any way. This project began as a 20% project at Google.

namebench runs on Windows and is available with a graphical user interface as well as a command-line interface.

How irritating is it to wait for a webpage to load? If you are a major surfer of the internet im sure you know how frustrating it is sometimes to wait for webpages to load or sometimes refreshing the whole page as it either didn't load at all or loaded partially . Now here is a software called namebench which interestingly was a google project and is now under google code . What this software basically does is it tells you which DNS server would be the best for you. So here's more on that.

The difference when it comes to DNS servers are that there is no one BEST DNS server . One DNS server can perform well at certain locations whereas another can perform better at other locations , so basically it all depends on where you are located and certain DNS servers perform the best at certain locations . Here is where namebench comes to the rescue . Namebench basically runs a series of tests to determine the best DNS server for you to use .

This is a small tutorial to help you configure DNS servers in Windows.Typically ISP's DNS servers are very slow primarily because they are overloaded and cannot handle so many requests.opendns a DNS service has some really good DNS servers which are faster, more secure and definetly more reliable..The most important being FASTER.So this tutorial will help you change your DNS server from your ISP's DNS servers to OPENDNS servers.

Firstly, so that you know, opendns server ips are 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220 .. typically two server ips are given, even from your isp.The first one is called Primary DNS server and the second is called Secondary DNS server.

OK, now on to the procedure..Its simple!!

Step 1 : Click on The Start Button and Click On Control Panel

Step 2 : Then Click on Network Connections

Step 3 : Then Right CLick on Your Network Connection you use to connect to the internet and click on Properties. If its a wired LAN it would be Local Area Connection , if its a wireless LAN it would be called Wireless Network Connection.

Step 4 : Then Select Internet Protocol(tcp/ipv4) and click on Properties

Step 5 : Then Select "Use the following DNS server addresses : " and enter Preffered DNS server as 208.67.222.222 and Alternate DNS servers as 208.67.220.220

Step 6 : Then Click on OK and close all windows

Thats it, your done, you computer should start using OpenDns servers From now for DNS requests.

Nice application - clean and works - only used it once - not investigated if you can configure it with your own list of preferred DNS servers. Because it's not just about speed, some DNS servers censor content as well. Also do you really want Googles servers to know EVERYTHING you look at ?
Interesting.
