Myaskovsky - Sym No 21 in f#, op 51 - Eugene Ormandy, Philadelphia O (1947) [Philidor; FLAC] (Size: 44.26 MB)
DescriptionProbably the popular of Myaskovsky's symphonies, the 21st is also the one that has been most recorded. That noted, little mention has ever been made of its first recording outside the Soviet, ostensibly in 1947, by Eugene Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra. Myaskovsky himself was pleased with the results, which he was not in a reading of the 22nd by Bernard Herrmann. (The composer demanded that it be withdrawn.) Though this is listed as 1947, Columbia didn't begin issuing LPs until 1948. And the cover bears the hallmarks of Columbia's 1950s artwork. The sound, too, seems more appropriate to the 1950s LP era, though some filtering was apparently done to the treble by the only extant source I could find for this item. Still, it's a fine performance, and the Philadelphia strings are fully in evidence. Bio of Myaskovsky included.
