My Spirit Flies To You by Buddhist monks of Sakya Tashi Ling - MP3 format
(Modern Buddhist genre) This is my overall favorite Buddhist CD. I am Western, used to modern music, so take that into account, but I find this CD the most inspirational. Others are more calming and centering, but this has a deep, resonate inspirational quality--not frenetic however. Following is detailed review that seems less than favorable... Ten years ago, Lama Jamyang Tashi Dorje founded a Buddhist Monastery in Catalonia, where many spiritually inclined individuals have since repaired to de-stress and seek healing of various sorts. It is safe to assume that they did not accomplish such while listening this bizarre opus, which can best be described as mantras meet Eurovision. Canned-sounding synths, charley-horsed programmed percussion and perkily mundane pop vocals are piled on top of choirs of chanting monks, but the modern and traditional elements not only have nothing in common but actually seem mutually antagonistic. For what it's worth, His Holiness the Dalai Lama has apparently "acknowledged the success" of the album and even congratulated the protagonists. Of course, Spain was also where Chant by the Benedictine Monks Of Santo Domingo de Silos, perhaps the most unlikely European-based international craze this side of the Macarena, originated. But the present release has more to do with Chantmania, a parody of the latter, in which the California-based Benzedrine Monks Of Santo Domonica, who are rumored to seek the divine through sleep deprivation, essayed selections like "Losing My Religion" and "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy?" --Christina Roden Sharing Widget |
